Paper vs Cloth Napkins for Hotels and Restaurants
Paper or cloth napkins for your hotel or restaurant? Compare guest experience, cost per use, laundry, branding and hygiene to choose the right mix.
We have been cutting cloth napkins and supplying paper napkins in Nagpur since 2000, and one of the most common questions from F&B managers is which to use. The honest answer is that most successful hotels use both, in different places. Here is how to decide.
Guest experience
Cloth napkins feel premium. In fine dining, banquets and wedding receptions they signal care and quality, and they look better in photographs. Good 3-ply paper napkins come surprisingly close, and for cafés, all-day dining and quick service, guests expect paper.
Cost per use
A cloth napkin costs more to buy but is used many times. Its real cost per use includes laundry, ironing, losses and replacement. A paper napkin costs very little per piece and has no handling cost after use.
As a rule of thumb, cloth tends to make sense where covers are fewer and the experience matters most, such as fine dining and banquets. Paper is usually cheaper where covers are high and turnover is fast, such as coffee shops, buffets and room service.
Laundry and operations
Cloth napkins need a working laundry process: collection, washing, stain treatment, ironing and folding. Poly-cotton blends hold their colour and shape better than pure cotton under heavy industrial washing, which is why many banquet halls choose them. Paper napkins remove this work entirely.
Branding
Both can carry your logo. Cloth napkins are screen printed and keep the print through washing. Paper napkins can be printed in one or two colours and are an affordable way to brand every table. Learn more on our custom printing page.
Hygiene
Single-use paper napkins are naturally hygienic. Cloth napkins are equally hygienic when laundered properly, but quality control at the laundry matters.

- All-day dining and coffee shop: good-quality 2-ply or 3-ply paper napkins
- Room service and takeaway: printed paper napkins
